The Invisible Brand Asset: Why Scent Is One of the Most Powerful Tools in Branding

You probably couldn’t sketch the layout of your favourite hotel lobby from memory, but if you’ve ever walked back into it months later and instantly recognised the fragrance, you’ve experienced something far more powerful than visual recall.

Before you’ve spoken to anyone or seen the room, your brain already knows where you are, that’s the power of scent.

When we think about branding, we tend to focus on what people can see. Logos, colour, typography, packaging and design dominate the conversation. Increasingly, brands also invest in how they sound. Yet one of the most emotionally powerful brand assets is often the one we never talk about: smell.

Unlike sight or sound, scent bypasses rational processing and connects directly with the brain’s limbic system, the centre of emotion, memory and behaviour. It doesn’t simply remind us of a brand; it makes us feel something about it.

For brands, this presents an extraordinary opportunity: to create emotional, subconscious connections that are difficult to achieve through visual identity alone.

At Free the Birds, we believe great branding engages all the senses. Every touchpoint should reinforce how a brand feels, not just how it looks. While visual identity remains fundamental, one of the greatest opportunities lies in a dimension that is often overlooked: scent.

The Missing Layer of Brand Identity

Scent has a unique relationship with memory and emotion. More than any other sense, fragrance creates immediate and lasting associations.

It’s why certain places stay with us long after we’ve left them. Consider Aesop. Its beautifully curated retail spaces, thoughtful interiors and calm visual identity already create a distinctive experience. Add its carefully considered signature scent and the environment becomes truly immersive. The experience moves beyond aesthetics and becomes emotional.

This is where branding becomes truly memorable.

What’s particularly interesting is that scent can be most powerful in categories where fragrance isn’t expected. Clothing, jewellery, automotive, sports, wellness, technology and even B2B brands all have the opportunity to create a distinctive sensory signature precisely because smell isn’t traditionally part of the experience.

We explored this ourselves by replacing the traditional business card with our FTB Beautiful Thinking® room scent. Rather than leaving behind a name, we leave behind an experience.

Designing Experiences, Not Just Identities

Today’s consumers don’t simply buy products or services, they buy experiences.

Whether stepping into a boutique hotel, browsing a flagship store, visiting a showroom or attending a brand event, every interaction shapes perception.

The strongest brands orchestrate every element to tell the same story. Visual language, materials, lighting, sound, customer service and scent should work together to express a consistent identity.

When these elements align, a brand becomes instantly recognisable without needing to say a word.

Scent as a Strategic Asset

A signature fragrance isn’t an accessory. It’s an extension of brand strategy.

Just as colour evokes emotion and typography communicates personality, scent can reinforce positioning.

Fresh citrus notes may express clarity, optimism and innovation. Soft florals can suggest warmth and elegance, while rich woods and amber often communicate craftsmanship, heritage and luxury.

The objective isn't simply to make a space smell pleasant. It's to create an atmosphere that embodies the brand's values and leaves a lasting emotional impression.

Beyond the Physical Space

As branding becomes increasingly experiential, sensory identity extends far beyond retail environments.

Signature fragrances can be woven into packaging, customer gifting, hospitality, events and brand activations, creating consistency across every interaction.

Over time, scent evolves from a fleeting moment into a recognisable brand asset.

Designing Brands People Remember

Great branding has always been about creating emotional connection, visual identity captures attention. Verbal identity shapes perception and sensory experiences create memory.

Sonic branding has rapidly evolved into a recognised and strategically valuable part of modern brand identity. Brands invest in distinctive audio signatures because they understand the power of recognition through sound.

Scent, however, remains largely unexplored, not because it’s any less powerful, but because far fewer brands have embraced its potential.

That gap represents one of the most exciting opportunities in contemporary brand building.

As designers, our role isn’t simply to create brands that look beautiful. It’s to create brands that people remember, trust and return to.

The future of branding isn't just visual. It's multisensory. Perhaps the next frontier isn't creating another visual asset at all. Perhaps it's designing something people can't see…but will never forget.
